Tribute to Kathy Ivins
By Bob Hicks, Vice President of Development
July 27, 2010

Kathy Ivins was the kind of board member that a non profit needs... committed to the mission, conscientious about the responsibilities, capable of doing the right things and cordial in her work with the board and staff. Kathy loved working with Goodwill and we were blessed to have her in the Goodwill family.
When the Board was looking for the new home in 1995 that would allow Goodwill to grow to become a leader in human services delivery, Kathy arranged the meeting that led to the purchase of our main headquarters in Richmond. She was an invaluable resource and contributor in Goodwill's facilities expansion, bringing her skills in the field of commercial real estate to the table for the benefit of the organization.
As Board Chair, she devoted her time and considerable energy and style to the task with class and humor. She presided with a friendly command that encouraged those around her to want to help and did it, when the situation required, with a smile and a wink that made you want to really be involved. She knew when to get "down to business" and when to crack a joke or slip in a comment that let you know that she really did have the situation in hand.
Kathy was the first to respond to those requests that non profits so often make of board members, whether it was being there to make Goodwill's associates and family members feel special, actively participating in planning our organization's future or making the first contribution to a fundraising appeal, she set the mark.
We are all better persons for having had the opportunity to know Kathy, and to work with her in a cause worth doing.
We will sorely miss her. |
